Course Description
22.5 Continuing Education Hours: 8 hours of online self-study + 14.5 hours of hands-on experience
Common hip problems can be complicated! The classic bursitis is most often a tendo-bursitis and is associated with a history of low back pain, early aging of the hip joint, and asymmetry of the lower extremities – a condition now known as greater trochanteric pain syndrome. Labral tears are commonly part of a complex pathology that can include psoas tendinopathy and/or bursitis, and frequently micro-instability; it is no wonder that so many patients struggle after hip arthroscopy.
This IAOM course follows a systematic approach of analyzing pathoanatomy and clinical assessment that leads to an accurate diagnosis. Effective treatment strategies are presented that encompass pathology-specific soft tissue and joint-specific techniques, as well as suggested exercises that protect healing structures.
Special topics of assessment and treatment include: labral pathology versus loose bodies; hip joint micro-instability; pubic symphysis and adductor disorders within the differential diagnosis of groin pain and/or pelvic ring instability; differential diagnosis of lateral hip pain; and differential diagnosis of buttock pain versus deep gluteal pain syndrome with specific identifiers to isolate the hip from spine problems. Also included are the role hip stiffness plays in perpetuating low back pain and how it prevents a total knee patient from achieving full knee extension.
Method of learning
The online study is self-paced and available 24/7. It is segmented into lecture modules plus module assessments to gauge understanding (must meet a minimum score prior to moving to the next module). Viewing time can be started and stopped as desired. Course certificates can be printed upon completion of the course.
The LIVE portion of this course offers short lecture and extensive hands-on lab demonstrating and mentoring techniques. PowerPoint presentations are used, and participants receive a digital manual with all course materials. This experience focuses on techniques and problem-solving, as well as clinical analysis, synthesis, and application via case studies. Instructor-participant ratio is small to allow individualized mentorship. Instructors ensure participant understanding via observation and skills self-assessments.

Objectives and Goals
- Become an expert in the evaluation of hip conditions with confidence in differentiating various musculoskeletal pathologies.
- Effectively combine selective treatment methodologies to include manual therapy, movement strategies, and psychosocial considerations that lead to optimal and efficient patient outcomes.
At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- integrate pathoanatomy, physiology and biomechanics of the Hip into 5 potential differential diagnoses.
- Perform a concise clinical examination of the Hip.
- Apply a methodology for interpreting the clinical examination to reach a precise clinical diagnosis of the Hip.
- Perform effective treatment through an accurate understanding of surface anatomy and tissue physiology of the Hip.
- Apply effective techniques for mobilization of the Hip.
- Integrate soft tissue and specific articulation techniques to affect total treatment of the Hip.
- Analyze a specific framework for prescription of affliction-specific exercises for the Hip
