Course Description

26 Education Hours: 8 hours of Online Self Study + 18 Hours hands-on experience

Who can attend:

Only licensed medical practitioners who have completed a pelvic rehab course with pelvic floor internal exam may attend.  This may include PT’s, Nurse practitioners, PA’s, DC’s, DO’s and MD’s.  Before attending, please check with your state/country’s licensing board that dry needling is within your scope of practice.

The importance of safety and clean techniques are taught and practiced throughout the workshop, ensuring that participants become accustomed to working with gloves and maintaining a neat and safe workspace throughout.  They will practice the techniques of inserting, manipulating, removing and disposing of the needles on the first morning of the course.

Participants will learn and practice the use of superficial dry needling including fascia and scars, periosteal pecking, and deep dry needling of the buttock, ant hip, thigh, lumbar, abdominal, and pelvic floor muscles.

Clinical reasoning with importance of agonist/antagonist relationships, identifying active, latent and satellite trigger points, myofascial pain accompanied by joint pathology, and treatment priorities will be discussed near the end of the course. Case studies are included to apply clinical reasoning and recognize common indications for dry needling.

Students are examined at the end of each practical day with a competency exam.

Objectives and Goals

Participants, upon completion of this course can expect to: • Understand and integrate myofascial concepts into the assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders • Understand neurophysiology of both Myofascial pain and mechanisms for needle de- activation of TrPs having reviewed current research in the field • Have improved skill and competency in assessing and locating MTrPs and an awareness of common referral patterns • Develop skill and competence in using dry needling for deactivation of MTrPs • Be able to set up a clean field needling station and perform safe needling techniques • Integrate best clinical practice with research evidence when introducing this technique into their clinical setting • Attain skills of superficial dry needling for: fascia and scars, periosteal pecking, and deep dry needling of the buttock, ant hip, thigh, lumbar, abdominal, and pelvic floor muscles. • Be aware of relationships of vessels, nerves and organs in relation to areas needled • Develop the skills to integrate the techniques learned in the course into the rehabilitation concept of their core discipline
