This two-day in person seminar covers the basic skills necessary to safely begin Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) techniques. In this introductory skills course, participants will receive extensive instruction on the proper use of IASTM through a lab-focused teaching format. The course will address proper instrument selection to address body contours and reach target tissues. This basic training will introduce students and clinicians to IASTM therapy, its clinical applications, physiological effects/benefits, and potential contraindications.

Objectives and Goals

At the conclusion of this course, the learner will be able to:

• Differentiate where IASTM originated and understand the foundation principles
• Apply the latest research with all aspects of IASTM
• Differentiate the different types of tools available, examine and select the appropriate tool
• Identify what fascia is and how to assess dysfunctions
• Identify and discuss the precaution and contraindications of IASTM
• Perform at least 5 MFR techniques to the cervical and shoulder regions
• Perform at least 5 IASTM techniques to cervical and shoulder
• Identify the difference between active and latent trigger points
• Criticize a case study for relevance
• Perform 3 MFR effective techniques to upper thigh for hip bursitis and ITB syndrome
• Perform 3 IASTM techniques to the hip for a THR patient
• Differentiate common dysfunctions of the hip, knee and ankle
• Identify 3 MFR/IASTM techniques for common orthopedic dysfunctions
• Perform 3 IASTM techniques for the ankle and foot

There will be a maximum of 16:1 student to instructor ratio.
