Course Description
17 Contact Hours/1.7 CEUs – 7 hours online and 10 hours live
This course comprises 7 hours of online content, plus 10 hours of live lectures and practical exercises, all completed over one day.
The online course includes exam questions for each lecture. This online portion must be completed before the practical course and will fulfill written examination requirements for dry-needling courses.
The one-day intensive will prepare participants to treat most of the common diagnoses that involve myofascial pain. The importance of safety and clean techniques is taught and practiced throughout the workshop, ensuring that participants become accustomed to working with gloves and maintaining a neat and safe workspace throughout. They will practice the techniques of inserting, manipulating, removing, and disposing of the needles on the first morning of the course.
Attendees will learn and practice the use of superficial dry needling, including fascia and scars, periosteal pecking, and deep dry needling of the buttock, thigh, lower leg, and lumbar muscles. Case studies are included to apply clinical reasoning and recognize common indications for dry needling. This course includes practical competency exams at the end of each day.
Who can attend:
Only licensed medical practitioners may attend. This may include PT’s, OT’s, ATC’s, Nurse Practitioners, acupuncturists, PA’s, DC’s, DO’s and MD’s. Before attending, please check with your state/country’s licensing board that dry needling is within your scope of practice.

Objectives and Goals
Participants on completion of the 1 day online followed by the 1 day practical Dry Needling for The Overhead Athlete course can expect to:
- Integrate myofascial concepts into the assessment and diagnosis of musculoskeletal disorders.
- Analyze the neurophysiology of myofascial pain and explain mechanisms for needle deactivation of trigger points (TrPs), referencing current research.
- Demonstrate skill and competency in assessing and locating myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) and identifying common referral patterns.
- Apply dry needling techniques for deactivation of MTrPs.
- Demonstrate the correct procedure for preparing and maintaining a clean field needling station.
- Incorporate best clinical practices with research evidence when introducing dry needling into their clinical setting.
- Perform superficial and deep dry needling techniques, including fascial release, scar treatment, periosteal pecking, and needling of lower extremity and lumbar muscles.
- Identify the anatomical relationship of needle areas to vessels, nerves, and organs using surface anatomy skills.
- Integrate the techniques learned into the rehabilitation concepts of their core discipline
