Course Description
26 Education Hours: 7 hours of Online Self Study + 19 Hours hands-on experience
The online course includes exam questions for each lecture. This online portion must be completed before the practical course and will fulfill written examination requirements for dry needling courses.
The two-day intensive will prepare participants to treat most of the common diagnoses that involve myofascial pain. The importance of safety and clean techniques are taught and practiced throughout the workshop, ensuring that participants become accustomed to working with gloves and maintaining a neat and safe workspace throughout. They will practice the techniques of inserting, manipulating, removing, and disposing of the needles on the first morning of the course.
Students will learn and practice the use of superficial dry needling including fascia and scars, periosteal pecking, and deep dry needling of the buttock, thigh, shoulder, cervical, and lumbar muscles. Case studies are included to apply clinical reasoning and recognize common indications for dry needling. This course includes practical competency exams at the end of each day.”
Who can attend:
Only licensed clinicians with dry needling in their scope of practice may attend. There are exceptions for PT students when approved by their faculty.
Physical Therapy Students receive a student certificate that does not allow them to dry needle. When the student graduates and is licensed, they may contact IAOM-US for a clinician certificate.
PTAs cannot attend.

Objectives and Goals

- Integrate myofascial concepts into the assessment and diagnosis of 3 musculoskeletal disorders.
- Apply the neurophysiology of both Myofascial pain and mechanisms for needle deactivation of 5 TrPs located in upper extremity, 5 TrPs in lower extremity and 5 in the spine musculature.
- Identify 5 active and 5 latent MTrPs using common referral patterns
- Identify skill and competence in dry needling for deactivation of 5 MTrPs located in the spine musculature.
- Integrate specific principles of dry needling to set up a clean field needling station and perform safe needling techniques.
- Integrate knowledge from “best clinical practice” and research evidence when introducing dry needling techniques to treat 5 different musculoskeletal conditions associated with myofascial pain syndrome.
- Attain skills of dry needling for:
- 1.Level I: Perform superficial dry needling techniques including 3 fascial release, 2 scars, and 4 periosteal pecking; deep dry needling techniques of 3 posterior shoulder, 3 for the cervical, 3 for the low back, 2 buttock, 2 anterior hip, and 3 thigh muscles.
- Identify relationship of these areas needled to vessels, nerves and organs by identifying these muscles and structures
